Architectural Playground Equipment, Inc. (APE) was founded in 2010 by Jane Clark Chermayeff, a leader in the development of family environments for learning and play. Jane Clark Chermayeff & Associates
(JCC&A), a firm Jane founded in 1984, served as the first U.S. representative for Richter from 1999 to 2009.
APE and Richter share a time-tested commitment to the importance of learning and playing outdoors. Our relationship began with a highly successful collaboration at the New York Hall of Science Playground in Queens and has continued with numerous themed water parks and playgrounds in Puerto Rico and the United States including, among others, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Hoboken Pier C, Shelby Farms Park in Memphis and the Morton Arboretum’s Children Adventure Garden outside of Chicago. The two most recent projects are Beauvoir Outdoors at the National Cathedral in Wasington, D.C. and the "Hammock Grove" at Governors Island, NY.
Richter is an international, award-winning playground equipment design and manufacturing company, known for its unusual equipment design and for its commitment to play value and safety. The 45-year-old, family-owned company is based in Bavaria, Germany. Notable Richter projects in Europe include Madrid RIO, Expo ’98–Lisbon, Legoland–Denmark, and the celebrated Princess Diana Memorial Playground–Kensington Gardens, London.
To ensure the highest quality of technical and safety support, APE has two additional associates. Our technical adviser is Ed Miller, the Vice President of Corby Associates, a 60-year-old, family-run company providing playground installation, safety inspection, and repair services. Our safety advisor is Teri Hendy, a nationally recognized authority on playground safety and design.
As the exclusive U.S. distributor of Richter playground equipment in the United States and Puerto Rico, APE expands Richter's presence, commercial capacity, and technical service in North America.
