PRINCE HARRY - Getting into the swing

The Kletterwald climbing park on the Innpromenade in Passau
The Innpromenade in Passau is one of the town’s most popular meeting points for young and old alike: Families stroll alongside the Inn river; they sit with friends on the grassy areas and benches that adorn the riverside, chatting, watching the swans, or visiting one of the largest public playgrounds in the old town with the children. In particular, the old tree-lined spot that runs along Gottfried-Schäfer-Strasse offers enough space for specific activities. It is here, centrally located for the old town, that a children’s playground replete with play ship and generously-sized sand play area for the littleones and thematically situated on the riverside, has been created.

“Governors Island is the centerpiece of our efforts to revitalize New York City’s waterfront,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “In 2010, we promised that our administration would make Governors Island a destination that New Yorkers and visitors would be able to enjoy for generations. Today’s park groundbreaking takes us one step closer that goal.”

Are playgrounds too safe?
In recent years, there's been a great deal of concern about playground safety. But Harry Harbottle of the German playground manufacturer Richter Spielgerate argues that an excess of concern about minor injuries means many playgrounds are being dumbed down to the point where they no longer offer a challenge to children. And he points out that research shows not allowing children to take risks may have serious consequences for their physical and  mental health.
